A free, self-directed residency for writers — a quiet house, a small Southern town, and as much time as you need to do the work.
The Cedars welcomes writers at any stage of their craft into a quiet, private writing space in downtown Water Valley — a charming Main Street community in the heart of the Deep South.
For writers working on a single project in any genre, at any stage, from anywhere in the world.
Twenty minutes from Oxford, an hour from Clarksdale, and 90 minutes from Memphis, Tennessee — come work in the real-life Yoconapatafa (Yoknapatawpha) river valley, the little “postage stamp of native soil” of William Faulkner, Hubert Creekmore, Ida B. Wells, Andrew Jafa, Eudora Welty, Etheridge Knight, and many others.
You will need to get yourself to Water Valley and feed yourself once you’re here; everything else (laundry, utilities, rent) is provided. There are no fees.
